I finally have some time to sit and write! My adventures of the past week will be posted very soon.
The past few nights I have been spending time with friends in the village and going to bed early. Since I was unable to write out my adventure on the computer from the moment I landed in Dar Es Salaam, I’ve been journaling in a small book. Due to a small hiccup that I will explain later, we had to leave Bukimau (the school I will be working at for most of the summer) and go back to Madisi (the original home village we started in) in a very quick manner. Due to the rushed nature of it all, I left my journal in my room at the house I was staying at in Bukimau and all of my detailed notes about the past several days. Until I go back to Bukimau in around 3 days (or sooner), I will write what I can to the best of my ability! I may or may not come back with more details, but I will make sure to let you all know.
Additionally, I haven’t been able to take many pictures. To start, I haven’t even had my phone on me for the past 4 days and after making it to the village, it was strongly discouraged to take photos. It’s seen as “touristy” and disrespectful so I wanted to avoid that. I will definitely share what I have and hopefully get to fill in the blanks with photos as my trip progresses! I was also warned to be careful about writing about Tanzanian cultural aspects as I’m a foreigner from a completely different culture that has only been here a couple of days. I am trying my best to appropriately represent and explain the culture of Tanzania but let it be known that my word is not the end all be all truth. The best way to understand the culture is to come experience it for yourself!

Can’t wait to read more!! The culture there sounds quite interesting!!
ReplyDeleteHa had wondered since no new blog posts 👍. Good to respect local customs when traveling.
ReplyDeleteHi Evan! The Gerlitz's are so proud of you and love keeping up with your blog. Can't wait to read more as they become available. As I used to tell Jack every day before school (and still do when I get to talk to him) Be Safe, Be Smart, Be Awesome! Have fun and do something nice for somebody today. =)
